About the lessons

How long do the surf lessons last? What time are they held?

Our classes are usually two hours long. Times may vary; we'll send you an email with the scheduled classes on a weekly basis.

Am I too old to start surfing?

There is no age limit to surfing. You can sign up for any of our courses. Since we started we have taught surfing to people of very different ages, from children to pupils over 60 years old. The waves will always be waiting for you.

Why learn to surf in Castelldefels?

Thanks to the slope of the seabed, the waves in Castelldefels make for ideal surf lessons, recommendable for both adults and children at beginner level, who will feel relaxed and unafraid. We offer approximately 270 days’ surfing a year between Barcelona and Castelldefels.

Can I make up any lessons I’ve missed?

You can make up classes provided that you give us 24 hours’ notice. Classes can be made up at other times depending on the availability of places.

Are the waves suitable in Catalonia? Is it a good place to learn?

Catalonia is an ideal place to learn to surf. The waves are not usually very big and this helps us to automate the movements and techniques for standing up without having to cope with rough seas at the same time.

How old are the pupils at the school? Is it a school only for children?

At the school we have pupils of very different ages, from 6 to 60. We organise activities for all kinds of people, ages and surfing levels.

What happens when there aren’t any waves?

If a lesson has been scheduled because the forecast was favourable, but when we arrive at the beach finally there are no waves, we either cancel the class or organize alternative activities as you wish. You pay to go surfing.

What happens if the sea is too rough or the waves aren't safe for surfing?

If we think the sea conditions are dangerous or too rough, we cancel the lesson and make it up in the future. We also organise alternative activities as you wish. You decide!

When will I know when there are classes or good surfing waves?

Every week we send out emails announcing the lessons planned depending on the weather conditions. If you want to join a lesson, just click on the email link to confirm you’ll be coming.

Requisites

What are the requirements for joining the school?

You must know how to swim to go on any of the courses at the Escola Catalana de Surf. It is also advisable to be in good physical shape, which will help you take greater advantage of the course.

What should I bring to the surfing lesson?

You should bring a towel, swimwear (close fitting as it is more comfortable under a wetsuit), flip-flops and sunscreen, and water shoes in winter.

Is the surfing equipment included in the price or do I have to rent it separately?

All the equipment is included in the surf lesson or course. In addition to a surf or paddle board we will provide you with a wetsuit of the right size.

When can I do the course?

You can start the course anytime you want. Once enrolled on a course we will send you an email with a calendar of days, times and places. You choose the day you want to come. It’s that easy!

Can I bring my own surf gear?

Of course. You can bring your own board, wetsuit, etc.

What’s the minimum age for surfing lessons?

Six years old. Pupils must know how to swim.

I’ve never been surfing. Is that a problem?

Our introductory courses are aimed at both people who are learning to surf from scratch and those who have already tried it.

Children and safety

Is surfing dangerous?

As in any sport there are always risks. However, the seas off the beaches at Sitges and Castelldefels are generally easy too cope with and not very rough, which signifies greater safety. Our instructors are responsible for the pupils’ safety and if for some reason they think the sea does not meet the necessary safety conditions, they will cancel the class.

Who supervises the children during the activities?

The school’s instructors are responsible for the pupils’ safety. All our instructors are trained in first aid and lifesaving.

Who is responsible for the children’s safety during the classes?

The instructors keep a constant watch on the pupils. There are never more than 8 students per instructor in the lessons, which means we can offer quality classes with constant monitoring. What’s more, the beach at Castelldefels where the lessons take place have shallow waters. This facilitates the formation of small waves that are easy to learn on while offering a good level of safety. All the surfing equipment at beginner level is deliberately soft to cushion any possible blows and complies with the safety regulations.

Is surfing difficult?

Nobody learns to surf in a week, but during this time you will find out if you like the sport or not. Some 90% of our students learn to stand on the board on the first day. Surfing is a technical sport and lots of fun. You'll enjoy yourself from the very first day. Once you’ve learnt the basics you’ll be able to move on to the intermediate and advanced levels.

Health

Can I wear contact lenses in the water?

Surfing with contact lenses is not usually a problem. However there is always the risk of losing them. If you normally wear hard contact lenses we recommend you use disposable ones.

What happens if a child doesn’t feel well or hurts himself/herself?

In the unlikely event that a pupil hurts himself/herself, the instructor in charge will inform the director of the school and the parents if the child’s health has been affected in any way, mentioning any blows or injuries, even if they are not serious. Both of the Escola Catalana de Surf’s centres are near a C.A.P. (Primary Care Centre).

In the event that the child’s parents or guardians are not on the beach or using the school’s facilities, the parents will be informed of the situation and the child transferred to a primary care centre to be seen by a doctor. Depending on the diagnosis and treatment prescribed by the doctor, and after consultation with the parents, what to do next is decided: whether the child should remain at the centre or be taken home, for example.

All courses at the Escola Catalana de Surf include accident and health insurance that covers care and treatment and also the transfer of the child to the family home if necessary. The school’s management team is trained in first aid.
