From July 8 to 10, the beaches of Liencres (Cantabria) hosted the 2025 Spanish Regional Surfing Championship, a key event on the national calendar that brings together the best regional teams from across Spain. Catalonia delivered a strong performance, earning an impressive fifth place with a total of 17,287 points, in a highly competitive edition marked by excellent weather and wave conditions.
As reported by the Catalan Surfing Federation on fsurf.cat, the Catalan team reached 14 out of 26 possible finals, demonstrating consistency and strength across a range of disciplines—including shortboard, longboard, bodyboard, SUP paddle, and kneeboard—across all age groups, from under-14 to master divisions, in both men's and women's categories.
Despite Catalonia’s solid showing, the top spot went to the Canary Islands (21,770 points), followed by Galicia (20,105), Asturias (19,966), and the host region, Cantabria (19,344). Just shy of a podium finish, Catalonia’s performance nevertheless confirmed the team’s growing reputation as a competitive force in Spanish surfing.
The team was led by Abel Marsal, who coached a talented lineup including Jan Bein, Ferran Sancho, Jordi Soro, Cristina Caba, Pablo Páramo, Toni Araya, Coral Sacrest, Marc Foraster, Eva Díaz, Jan Foraster, Lara Ascanio, and Quimey Zamora. According to the Federation, the group’s commitment and energy were key to their success.
Carlos López, president of the Catalan Surfing Federation, praised the team’s participation, stating that their results were the outcome of “effort, determination, and team spirit.” He also emphasized the importance of continued investment in developing new talent and promoting less represented disciplines.
At the Escola Catalana de Surf, we celebrate this achievement as a reflection of the hard work being done across the region. Results like these are a boost for the many surf schools and clubs working daily to develop athletes, and a direct source of inspiration for our students. Fostering the sport in all its forms and building a strong foundation is essential to keep competing at the highest level.
This fifth-place finish is more than a good result—it’s a clear statement: Catalan surfing has both a bright present and a promising future.
